Within shallow geothermal energy, vertical systems are mainly understood to be the classic geothermal probe. In this context, systems up to 400 m drilling depth are defined as “shallow”. The vertical systems are used especially in highly concentrated urban areas. For the application, hydrogeological (e.g. groundwater influence) and rock-specific (e.g. pore space distribution, mineralogy) parameters are decisive for the facility dimensioning.
For larger facilities, a Thermal Response Test (TRT) is used to determine the local withdrawal rate. Corresponding tests and designs of geothermal systems are planned and implemented by the working group Shallow Geothermal Energy.
